Material matters because it remains close to the body. Metal gives a piece its line and weight. A stone holds colour and depth. The surface receives light, then time.
This is why most Magmei creations begin with sterling silver or, within the Origine collection, solid 18k or 9k gold. Natural gemstones, pearls and mother-of-pearl complete our palette. Unless otherwise stated, our gemstones and crystals are natural.
We choose these materials not only for what they are worth, but for how they feel, endure and change. Their qualities allow a design to live beyond a season. This is the foundation of Design Longevity.
Quality matters to us. So does character. The two are not opposites.
A natural stone may contain an inclusion, a line of growth or a shift in colour. These are traces of its formation. We do not consider every irregularity beautiful, nor would we compromise durability or a secure setting. We simply do not expect nature to reproduce itself with industrial uniformity.
Art Nouveau jewellers such as René Lalique showed that preciousness does not depend on flawless brilliance. In the right hands, glass, enamel, horn or silver could carry as much artistic force as a rare gem.
Craft comes afterwards, not to overshadow the material, but to reveal it. The lapidary finds the form held within a stone. The designer creates its relationship with the body. Different lives call for different choices. A piece meant to be passed on may take form in solid gold. Sterling silver may accompany the ease of everyday life. A gemstone may be chosen for a private meaning rather than its place in a hierarchy of value. Whatever the purpose, the same attention remains.
People sometimes speak of the energy of stones. We make no promise that a material can transform a life. Yet colour, touch and memory can become an anchor. A familiar piece may remind us of a person, a moment or a strength we already possess.
The stone does not create that strength. It may simply help us remember it.
